Video poker games at Vulkan Vegas

The video poker section is small compared with the slot lobby, but it covers the important variants:

  • Jacks or Better – the classic. A pair of jacks or better is the lowest paying hand.
  • Deuces Wild – all twos are wild, so the pay table starts at three of a kind.
  • Joker Poker – a 53-card deck with one joker as a wild card.
  • Bonus Poker and Double Bonus – extra payouts for four of a kind.
  • Multi-hand versions – play three, five, ten or more hands from the same starting cards.

How a round works

  1. Choose your stake. Most games pay the bonus for a royal flush only at the maximum number of coins.
  2. You are dealt five cards.
  3. Choose which cards to hold.
  4. The rest are replaced, and the final hand is paid according to the pay table.

That one decision – which cards to hold – is what separates video poker from a slot.

Reading the pay table

Two games called Jacks or Better can have very different returns. The difference is in the payouts for a full house and a flush:

Jacks or Better pay table Full house Flush Return with perfect play
9/6 ("full pay") 9 6 99.54%
8/5 8 5 97.30%
7/5 7 5 96.15%

For Deuces Wild, the full-pay version returns just over 100% with perfect strategy, but it is rare online; most versions return 97–99%. Look at the pay table before you play – it is shown on the game screen.

A simple strategy for Jacks or Better

You do not need to memorise a full strategy chart to play well. These rules, in order of priority, cover most hands:

  1. Hold any paying hand of two pairs or better.
  2. Hold four cards to a royal flush, even if it breaks a flush or straight.
  3. Hold any high pair (jacks or better).
  4. Hold four to a straight flush.
  5. Hold a low pair rather than unsuited high cards.
  6. Hold four to a flush.
  7. Hold two or more high cards of the same suit.
  8. With nothing else, hold the high cards; if there are none, draw five new cards.

Most video poker games have a "hint" or auto-hold feature in demo mode. Use it to practise before playing for money.

Video poker and bonuses

Video poker usually contributes only a small share of each stake to wagering, or none at all. That is because, with good strategy, it would make bonuses too easy to clear. Play it with your own balance and use slots for wagering.

Frequently asked questions

Which video poker game pays best?

Full-pay Deuces Wild and 9/6 Jacks or Better have the highest returns, provided you play correctly.

Is video poker luck or skill?

Both. The cards are random, but your decisions decide whether you get close to the game's maximum return.

Can I play video poker on my phone?

Yes, most versions work on the mobile site and in the Android app.

Is multi-hand video poker better?

It has the same return per hand but higher swings, because you are betting on several hands at once.
